MONTEREY COUNTY POPS! Announces the Return of Free Memorial Day Concert

After a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic, Monterey County Pops! President of the Board of Directors Steve DeCarli has announced the triumphant return of the annual Monterey County Pops! Memorial Day Concert on the Monterey City Hall Lawn. On Monday, May 30, 2022, the full 38-piece orchestra –conducted and hosted by Dr. Carl Christensen –will present an exciting program for all ages from 1 pm to 3 pm. The theme this year is  “To Remember and Honor”. Committed to their motto “Making a Difference Through Music,” the Pops! provides the entire concert free of charge. The concert will also be streamed live via our website and Channel 24.

The Memorial Day Concert opens at 1 pm with The Cypressaires Barbershop Chorus, directed by Kristen Thompson, with a great set of patriotic favorites. The Monterey County Pops! Orchestra performs a wide range of pops, patriotic, and Americana favorites– starting with a stirring performance of the traditional Armed Forces Salute ”and inviting the audience to rise in tribute to family members who have served.

The orchestra follows the salute with a special arrangement of Kool & the Gang’s “Celebrationto honor the return of live concerts. The varied musical program also includes the first local performance of “Rhapsodic Celebration” by American composer Robert Sheldon and “Spanish Fever” by Jay Chattaway, an American composer of film and television scores mainly known for his work for the Star Trek television series. The Pops! pay tribute to John Philip Sousa with his best-known marches “Semper Fidelis,” “The Liberty Bell,” “The Thunderer,” “Washington Post,” and “Stars and Stripes Forever”.

 “We are also very excited to feature the world premiere of a work by our very own local composer and horn player Jackie Orzel,” notes Dr. Christensen. Titled “Overture in C Minor–The Chukchansi:  Trial and Triumph,the music pictorializes the Chukchansi Yokuts tribe from near extermination in the early days of California’s statehood to their present flourishing as a vital presence in their homeland. Orzel dedicates the piece to the Chukchansi Tribe of the Picayune Rancheria at Coarsegold.

Additional guest performances include the Hartnell College Chamber Singers Ensemble conducted by Sandy Rudo presenting a choral medley from the famous musical Hamilton, including – “Alexander Hamilton,” My Shot,” “The Schuyler Sisters,” “The Room Where It Happens,” “Helpless,” and “Yorktown (The World Turned Upside Down)”.The program concludes with “The Navy Hymn”, “Taps, ”and Sousa’s “Stars and Stripes Forever.
