Marina High School Sophomores Need Your Help Through the Marina High School Mentorship Program
What is the Mentorship Program?
The Mentorship Program is a one-semester experience with scheduled meetings that cover topics such as but not limited to goal setting, academic progress, and career research. The purpose of this mentorship is to introduce scholars to the immense benefits of learning about college and career from a “real world” professional. Sophomores at Marina High school will be grouped with one adult mentor. The meetings will take place on campus in designated classrooms.
Why Would I Make a Good Mentor?
A mentor is an industry or community member who volunteers his or her time to talk with a student. Marina High School mentors come from different career industries, walks of life, backgrounds, ethnicities, and neighborhoods of our community. They are a guide who will listen, answer questions or help find the answers, and share all of those things that they wish they had known when they were sophomores in high school. Mentors support the scholars as they set and work towards the goals they want to reach. A mentor is a responsible adult, a trusted guide, a good listener, a reliable role model, a professional advisor, an active sponsor, a teacher of life, and an advocate for scholars. Everybody who has been successful in life can point to at least one mentor who helped guide them through some stage of their life.
How Much Time Is Involved?
Mentors are expected to attend a 1-hour training, to meet with designated scholars for three
45-minute sessions, and to attend a 30-minute debrief. Mentors will be provided with suggested discussion questions and talking points. Coffee and light pastries will be provided by scholars during all meetings. The mentor training and first mentor meeting are scheduled on the same day. The third mentor meeting and debrief are scheduled on the same day. The mentor commits to three meeting day sessions at Marina High School over the Fall Semester.
