Construction of 47 Low-Income Senior Apartments in Marina
This is an update on Junsay Oaks Senior Apartments’ construction progress. Watch for more updates throughout the coming months.
Construction is Underway
The long-awaited construction of Junsay Oaks Senior Apartments, just up the hill from the Marina Post Office, has finally begun! Ground was broken on December 18, 2017. We are now grading the site. Once the site improvements are done, we can begin working on the utilities.
Where Did the Name “Junsay” Come From?
Junsay Oaks Senior Apartments is named in honor of long-time Marina resident Joy Junsay. Joy served as the City Clerk for the City of Marina for 21 years. She is now the Executive Director of the Monterey County Peace Officers Association.
“I was born in Okinawa on an army base, and I came to the Peninsula by way of the Philippines in 1957 with my parents and four siblings. During my early years, I watched my parents and brothers bunch green onions in Salinas and work in the strawberry fields between Crescent Avenue and Del Monte Boulevard here in Marina.
My brothers and parents picked strawberries on the Junsay Oaks Parcel for several seasons back in the early 1960’s. Back then, the property was owned by Grandma and Grandpa Braga.
I know how much Marina needs affordable housing, and it will be helpful to have senior apartments right next to MST and the shopping center.”
